LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty University, the Virginia Department of Transportation and the city of Lynchburg are working together to figure out who will manage the new bridge over Route 460. The bridge, currently in construction, was designed by Liberty University and will be used to connect two sides of its campus because of limited access to Route 460. VDOT says Liberty is looking to add special features, such as a brick facade, a shared-use path, security and lighting systems.
“Being the experts on bridge construction and bridge maintenance, it's in the public's best interest for VDOT to maintain the structure. Liberty will take care of the amenities and the architectural elements, such as the brick facade, and the city will oversee things such as the snow removal, the condition, (the) road on top of the bridge,” said Harley Joseph, the district land use director for VDOT.
The agreement will go before the City Council Monday night. It's expected to be approved.
