State police identify man killed in Route 29 hit and run

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va.UPDATE

State police have identified the pedestrian killed on Route 29 as 52-year-old David Driscoll Jr of Big Island.

Police say he was walking in the travel lane of the exit ramp when hit by a car, which then drove away.

Driscoll's remains have been taken to the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for autopsy.

UPDATE

State police are investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed on Route 29.

It happened shortly after midnight Friday on the northbound Route 29 exit for Main Street in Altavista. 

According to state police, a man was walking in the travel lane of the exit ramp when he was hit by a vehicle. 

The driver left the scene. State police have seized a Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck as evidence. Charges are pending against the driver. 

State police are working to notify the man's family. A medical examiner will perform an autopsy.

ORIGINAL STORY 

An incident is blocking a stretch of Route 29 in Campbell County on Friday morning. 

All northbound lanes are closed near the Route 29 Business ramp by Route 714, which is in the Altavista area, 

Traffic is being detoured onto Route 714, then onto Route 712, and back onto Route 29 North. 

State police are there now investigating, though dispatchers were not able to say what was going on.

They do not have an estimate for when those lanes may reopen.
