Phase one of Lynchburg's utility, streetscape project is near completion

City officials say 8 blocks will re-open by next week

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Millions of dollars of improvements are coming to downtown Lynchburg.

The phase one part of the utility and streetscape project is near completion. City officials say the waterlines were more than 100 years old and needed to be replaced, but it could take years to finish.

Due to a few road blocks, crews are a few weeks behind schedule, but they're thrilled to be getting close to the end.

“We have addressed everything we can think of over the next several decades. We probably missed something. Things always change downtown. But we tried to do everything in each of the eight blocks that we've addressed,” Jim Talian, chief engineer of Lynchburg Water Resource, said.

Drivers and pedestrians will also see new sidewalks, landscaping, benches and trash cans. This is the first phase of a 10-year project costing the city $47 million.
