LYNCHBURG, Va. – You may not see many Salvation Army bell ringers in front of stores in Southwest Virginia this year. The red kettle campaign is its largest fundraiser in the Lynchburg area. The money raised provides 32,000 hot meals to the hungry and gives 12,000 nights of shelter to the homeless. But this year there are not enough volunteers.
"If we didn't have volunteers and we were forced to pay a bell ringer to come in here, then that would kind of cut into what we can actually do towards the overall programs,” said Tammy Shank, Salvation Army’s director of development for greater Lynchburg.
