GILES COUNTY, Va. – A multi-hour standoff ended peacefully in Giles County on Thursday night.
At 5:36 p.m. the Giles County Sheriff’s Office received a call after an elderly man had been shot in the leg at 3589 Church Hill Road in Eggleston.
The alleged shooter, Brian Keith Albert, of Gretna, also shot a dog inside the home, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Authorities have no word at this time on either the man's or the dog's condition.
The victim took the dog to a local veterinarian's office and was taken to the hospital from there, according to Giles County Sheriff W. Morgan Millirons.
First responding deputies were unable to make contact with Albert inside the home and a barricade situation ensued, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The Virginia State Police Tactical Team was called to assist.
At about 9 p.m., Albert surrendered by exiting the front door of the home and was taken into custody without further incident.
Authorities say they recovered a pistol inside the home.
Albert has been charged with discharging a firearm, but more charges are expected, Millirons said.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Officers are at the scene and have the house at 3589 Church Hill Road in Eggleston surrounded.
A tactical team is also at the scene. Authorities are now waiting on the State Police SWAT team out of Wytheville to arrive.
