Montgomery County man dies after falling off cliff while rock climbing

GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses has exceeded $10,000 goal

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. - The 38-year-old man died after falling while rock climbing, according to witnesses.

Curtis Rice was attempting to attach a hammock to the rock ledge with a clamp, but while attempting to check the clamp to ensure it was secure, he lost his balance and fell about 50 feet. 

The GoFundMe page created to help with funeral expenses has already exceeded its goal of $10,000.

ORIGINAL STORY

A man has died after falling off of a cliff, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. 

Deputies responded to the incident around 7 p.m. Saturday along Big Falls Road in the McCoy area of the county, which is about 10 miles west of Blacksburg. The cliffs overlook the New River.

Curtis Rice, a 38-year-old McCoy resident, died at the scene. 

His death is under investigation and more details are expected soon.
