New developments expand to north end of Blacksburg

New restaurants, retail spaces and apartments included in Uptown plan

A map plan for the future of the Uptown Development

BLACKSBURG – The Town of Blacksburg continues to expand with new construction. From the First and Main Development to growth in Downtown Blacksburg and around the Virginia Tech campus, we're expected to see continued change over the next few years.

Some of the biggest changes could come to a part of Main Street that's long been neglected, that's why Green Valley Builders are working to expand on the north end of town with two new projects, called Uptown and Uptown Village.

The Uptown development includes In-Balance Yoga Studio, which opened July 5. Construction is still underway on Main Street Veterinary Clinic, which is expected to open on August 1. Despite the growth we're already seeing, developers have a much bigger plan for this area.

For more than twenty years, Green Valley Builders has focused on specialized homes and other residential projects. Now they're working to get involved in commercial developments, as they work on one of their biggest commercial projects ever.

The North Main Street area of Blacksburg is where one of the owners, Justin Boyle, grew up. He says it's a part of town that's been ignored as long as he can remember.

"No one's really given much credit to the north end of town," he says. "We've got a lot of residents up here, so we're hoping we can better serve this end of town."

Once complete, the project will include retail space and apartments. The area along North Main Street is expected to house a restaurant.

While already approved by town council, it's a project that will still take several years to complete. A recent vote by town council has the second project, Uptown Village, on the fast track to completion.

Tuesday night, Blacksburg town council voted unanimously to approve the project, which will be built right across the street from the Uptown development. Construction is set to begin on the townhomes that will make up that project by September. The project is set to be complete in August 2018.
