Soybean oil spills as train derails in Giles County

Derailment happened at about 8:30 a.m Monday

GILES COUNTY, Va. – Hazmat teams are responding to a train derailment in Giles County Monday morning. 

It happened around 8:30 a.m. in the area of 3134 Eggleston River Road. 

Three of the eight cars on the Norfolk Southern train derailed.

There are no injuries, according to Giles County 911 Director John Davis.

The train was transporting soybean oil and it's believed that no more than 100 gallons spilled in the derailment.

Clean-up is expected to happen by Tuesday.

Four homes were evacuated, but all four have been cleared to return home. There are a couple of structures nearby but the area is fairly rural. 

Norfolk Southern has not issued any statement about the derailment yet.
