RICHMOND, Va. - A social studies teacher in Northern Virginia will soon compete for the title of National Teacher of the Year.

Michelle Cottrell-Williams was named Virginia Teacher of the Year Monday evening during a recognition ceremony at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. She was competing against eight regional winners, including a Salem teacher, Karey Henzey.

Although she did not end up taking home the top honor, Henzey was also honored during the ceremony. She was named a Virginia Regional Teacher of the Year for her work as a special education teacher at West Salem Elementary.

Cottrell-Williams took home $8,500 and several other prizes. The National Teacher of the Year will be announced in the spring at a White House ceremony. The last time a Virginia teacher held that honor was 1998.
