ROANOKE, Va. – Combat veterans are hard at work building a safe haven for homeless vets in northwest Roanoke.
The project is being led by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Blue Ridge Chapter.
On Monday, about a dozen veterans helped with the construction. By the end of this year, the lot will hold a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home for a veteran in need.
"It just gives you a good feeling knowing that you are doing something with your time that's going to help other people, especially veterans," said John Thorsten, a combat veteran.
"That is really amazing, to see everybody turn out. I mean, it's just a family atmosphere. Everybody's joking around and getting work done. It's really awesome," said David Hall, with 323 Masonry.
All of the labor and supplies for the build have been donated.
When the home is finished, the Trust House will take over and bring a veteran home.
