ROANOKE, Va. -
Sam’s on the Market has been on City Market for 80 of its 95 years of business, but at the end of this year they will be closing its doors.

"Places like this don't exist anymore and they will go away and we won’t have them anymore," said Marcia Scott, customer and sister to the president of Sam’s. Sam’s is located on the corner of Kirk Avenue and Market Street. The store sells uniforms and other clothing to law enforcement and the general public. The president, Jeff Goldstein, says that the decision to shut down was made quickly.

"Just this week they were trying to negotiate a sell but it didn't work out. So he wants to retire," said Goldstein.

Warren G. Harding was the president when Sam's first opened in 1922. Goldstein says they have sold close to a million items since then. Sam’s also has its own in-house seamstress who has been here for 15 years and an embroidery area. Sam’s is one of the few stores in the area that offers services of this kind.

Customers say there is nothing like the Sam’s experience and that it will be missed.

"The Sam’s experience is having somebody who climbs a ladder to get your boots and that personal fitting," said Scott.

The employees at Sam’s are currently trying to figure out where they will work next. They say it will be hard to find one that fits like this one.
