Animal shelters anticipate busy week with displaced pets from Florida

Lynchburg Home Society already receives 23 displaced pets from Florida

ROANOKE, Va. – Angels of Assisi is happy to report that 15 of the 16 displaced dogs from Hurricane Harvey have been adopted out.

“We have one left from that and now we're gearing back up for people affected by Hurricane Irma,” Matthew Brown, adoption center director at Angels of Assisi, said.

While little "Oreo" can't wait to find a new home, Angels of Assisi is expecting another busy week ahead.

“Later this week we will be receiving 20 to 40 dogs from Florida,” Brown said.

As Brown explains, the pets they will be getting were already up for adoption at the Jacksonville shelter.

“So they can make room for the pets that were displaced by the hurricane,” Brown said.

Other shelters are doing the same including the Humane Society in Lynchburg which just took in 23 pets from the Jacksonville Humane Society.

This doesn't include the number of anticipated pets still expected to come in from Texas.

“So I think we're going to end up seeing a very large number of displaced pets. They're going to need help,” Makena Yarbrough, executive director at the Lynchburg Humane Society, said.

Animal shelters throughout the region are overwhelmed by the amount of community support since the recent hurricanes.

“I am overwhelmed with how supportive everyone has been,” Yarbrough said.

Mangers at Angels of Assisi are hopeful that the community will continue to show support as they prepare for the displaced pets from Hurricane Irma.
