Botetourt County considers new apartment complex

Recent jobs boom emphasizing need for more housing

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – A recent jobs boom in Botetourt County is highlighting the need for more housing.

A study last year found that with more than 1,200 new jobs on the way, demand for housing could quickly surpass supply.

A proposed 266-unit apartment complex at a site right off exit 150 on Interstate 81 would help.

The complex cleared its first hurdle Monday night, as the Botetourt County Planning Commission recommended approving the necessary rezoning requests and permits to allow for construction.

"This project and others like it were considered previously, and the developers said, 'No, you did not have the jobs in order to make it work.' Now we have the jobs, and now they've come back," Botetourt County management assistant Cody Sexton said.

The final decision now goes to the county Board of Supervisors.
