ROANOKE, Va. - Local gun shop owners say gun sales are spiking.

Now they're seeing more women buying a gun.

Mark Williams, who owns Doomsday Tactical, says more than ever before, he's seeing women coming in to buy a gun.

“We were selling five guns on a good week. Now we’re selling 30 to 40 a week,” Williams said.

Out of those guns sold, Williams said 40 percent of them are going to female customers.

“Every day we get women coming here to buy a gun,” Williams said.

Michael Barton was purchasing another gun to add to his collection Thursday morning.

“If somebody comes in my house, I can make sure to protect me and my kids,” Barton said.

Owners at Safeside Tactical said their gun sales have not only increased by 30 percent in the past two months, the store's concealed handgun safety class has jumped from an average of 12 students to now nearly 50 students at a time.

“I hope I never have to use it on someone. That's the last thing I want to do,” Barton said.
