ROANOKE, Va. – For the first time, a local support group is partnering with the Roanoke Stars in a basketball game for those with disabilities.
Wheel Love is a group started by Carilion physical therapists for people with disabilities.
The group gives them a chance to get together doing a variety of activities while not letting injury get in the way of their lives.
On Saturday, Wheel Love is partnering with the Raonoke Stars basketball team for a game.
Teams are looking for players, and you don’t have to be a wheelchair user to play.
The hope is to build awareness of wheelchair basketball in Roanoke.
"I'm excited. We're going to start reaching more people, we have people coming from Bristol coming to this, so we're starting to get word out better, it's a great avenue to reach the disabled population,” said founder Jacob Tyree of the Roanoke Stars wheelchair basketball team.
"I would love for people to be aware of the disabilities as well as the opportunities for sports. I hope it goes well. We're all very, very excited about it, " said co-founder of Wheel Love Kellen Smith.
The basketball game is Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
No dunking is allowed.
The event will take place at Lancerlot Sports Complex.
It's free and open to the public.
