National Weather Service confirms EF1 tornado touched down in Craig County

The EF1 tornado was on the ground for less than a minute

CRAIG COUNTY, Va. – A tornado touched down in New Castle on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The EF1 tornado, with estimated maximum wind speeds of 105 mph, was on the ground for less than one minute.

While on the ground, it was about 150 yards wide and traveled a half mile.

Damage to six homes and considerable damage to garages and other buildings.

NWS says about 50 hardwood and softwod trees, some 70 feet tall, were snapped or uprooted.

Three cars were moved or rotated by the tornado with one truck being flipped on top of another.

Survey crews are out across the state and will release their findings as the day goes on for different areas.
