Public hearing held on Interstate 81 design in Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. - Whether it's an accident or rush- hour traffic, the 2-mile stretch of Interstate 81 that runs between Roanoke and Salem is used almost every day by thousands in southwest Virginia.

That's why the Virginia Department of Transportation held a public hearing on Tuesday night about the new project that will ease congestion.
VDOT is working on a plan to add a lane to both directions of I-81 between Exit 141 in Salem and Exit 143 in Roanoke.

People were able to comment on the designs before construction begins on the project in 2021.

VDOT is also proposing sound walls along northbound I-81.
If you didn't attend the public hearing, you can continue send in your comments on the project until Nov. 24.
