ROANOKE,Va. - Thanksgiving Eve is one of the deadliest holidays for our nation, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In 2016 alone, more than 10,000 people died as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the NHTSA.
On average, NHTSA reports two in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime.
When it comes to staying safe this Thanksgiving, police said planning is key, and they encourage everyone celebrating to do so.
"We will pay for a spot downtown, and then we will either Uber back home or have a friend take us back," said Taylor Sullivan, who lives in Roanoke.
However, sometimes those plans are altered.
Big Lick Boomerang is a local company that helps prevent drinking and driving.
“Many peoples' reason why they risk a DUI say it always comes down to needing their car the next day and not wanting to leave it behind,” Diane Rumbolt, the owner of Big Lick Boomerang, said.
The service will be offering $5 off for first-time users and for current users who refer other friends. Also, it will be extending its usual service time for the holidays.
