UPDATE: Roanoke County Police take man into custody after hours-long standoff

Police asked people to stay indoors while they worked to defuse the situation

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. - UPDATE:

4 a.m. Tuesday: Roanoke County police have identified the suspect as 30-year-old Roanoke County resident Derek Besase. 

Besase is charged with two felonies and nine misdemeanors, including shooting a gun inside a residence, possession of a gun by a felon, assault and property damage. 

While officers were trying to communicate with him, Besase appeared to barricade doors, according to a police spokeswoman. Around 10:10 p.m. officers heard a gun firing inside the home. 

Besase came outside carrying a rifle after SWAT deployed chemical agents into the home, according to police. He fired multiple shots into the air before the throwing the rifle down into the yard around 11:45 p.m. Officers were able to subdue him a few minutes after that. 

Besase is being held at the Roanoke County Jail. Additional charges are pending further investigation. 

12 a.m. Tuesday: Our crew on scene says Roanoke County Police have taken the suspect into custody. He has not yet been identified. More details are expected in the morning. 

Roanoke County police are trying to make contact with a man they say threatened family members.

At about 6:50 p.m., police say a 30-year-old man threatened his family members with a knife and vandalized cars, according to Roanoke County spokeswoman Amy Whittaker.

He later retreated into a home and police are working to make contact with the man.

Whittaker says no one has been hurt and the area is secure.

A WSLS 10 crew has confirmed that the incident has moved from North Spring Drive to Wipledale Ave.

Police sent a text message to people in the area saying, "ROANOKE COUNTY POLICE: All residence in this area please stay inside your residence at this time until further notice. :5405623265"
