Runners, walkers take part in 12th annual Drumstick Dash

Proceeds help fund Roanoke Rescue Mission

ROANOKE, Va. – Thousands hit the pavement this morning in downtown Roanoke for the 12th annual Drumstick Dash.

For many families, running the 5k has become both a Thanksgiving day tradition and an opportunity to help feed those who rely on the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

Even in its 12th year, new families are joining the cause.

"Everyone needs to eat, and this is the time of year to give and the time of the year to help out your fellow man," said Shane Turner, who participated in the race. "It's hard right now. It's hard for everybody, and it's good to help out people, makes you feel good inside."

Just $10 provides 100 meals to the homeless, according to officials with the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

Even if you didn't run today, you can still donate. Click here to learn more.
