Scam callers targeting Appalachian Power customers

Scammers getting more elaborate in approach, AEP spokesperson says

ROANOKE, Va. – If you're a customer of Appalachian Power, there's a scam you might want to watch out for.

Local AEP spokesperson Teresa Hall said scam callers are targeting their customers including business owners, renters, and homeowners.

While phone scams are nothing new, scammers are getting more elaborate in their approach, as they are now directing customers to a 1-800 number with an automated voice that says, “You have called Appalachian Power.”

“If somebody calls you and they're threatening to disconnect your power and the language they’re using is threatening in any way, if you have any suspicion or if your gut tells you something's wrong about this call, hang up immediately, contact the authorities, let them know and also contact Appalachian Power,” said Hall.

Hall added that if you have any question with your bill, you should look at the bill itself which will have a 1-800 number for Appalachian Power, and to call that number.
