Pedestrian dies after being hit by vehicle in Northwest Roanoke

Police say the man was lying in the roadway when he was hit

ROANOKE, Va. – UPDATE

Roanoke police now say the man who was hit by a vehicle on Monday night has died.

James Edward Rose, 51, of Roanoke, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the investigation so far reveals that Rose was lying in the roadway when he was hit around 8 p.m.

The driver called 911 and has been cooperative. The driver has not been charged.

Walter Eanes lives right across the street from Rose and said he would always see Rose coming out the house for walks.

"I would see him come out of his driveway and walk past the mailbox and the newspaper boxes and he will turn right and go up Old Stevens Road. And he will either go to Food Lion or the store at the bottom of the hill. He will go there or whatever and walk back. He would stay close pretty much to the curb coming back and I will speak to him from time to time.

Eanes says Rose also used a cane and would sometimes limp as he was walking.

We did try reaching out to the people who Rose was living with, but no one came to the door.
