BASSETT, Va. - A Southside high school student-athlete is being recognized as one of the best in the nation.

Wendy's High School Heisman program named Bassett High School junior Fisher Athey a "School Winner."

Fisher was one of about 250 across the Commonwealth to receive the honor in 2017.

He plays soccer, basketball and football and was nominated by his soccer coach, Larry Wyley.

"It was exciting to be given that honor," Athey said. "A lot of different feelings because that was just the first step of going on to state and possibly nationals."

"Fisher showed last year a lot of leadership," Wyley said. "He got really good grades, he worked really hard in the classroom and he works hard in the community as well."

Several other high school student athletes from across Southwest Virginia were also named 2017 "School Winners."

From the group of school winners in each state, one female and one male were chosen as the state's overall winners.

Of those 100 students, five females and five males will now be chosen as national finalists, with one overall female and male being selected as the national Wendy's High School Heisman.
