Danville Parks and Rec delays boathouse opening due to high river level

Boathouse traditionally opens Memorial Day weekend

DANVILLE – With the Dan River running high from all the recent rain, people are advisde to stay off the river this weekend.

Friday afternoon, the river was at about 12 feet according to the National Weather Service.

The Danville Parks and Recreation Department has postponed the annual Memorial Day weekend opening of its kayak and canoe rentals to discourage people from getting on the water.

The department's boat demo event for people interested in renting a kayak or canoe has also been postponed.

It's all part of the department's effort to keep people safe.

"One of the big things we're having is lots of logs are washing down," said Danville Parks and Recreation outdoor program coordinator Kyle Autrey.

"Those become something called strainers. You can get caught on those even if you can't see them above the water. If you're in a kayak or another boat, you can get caught up on those and it's really dangerous," Autrey said.

Boat rentals are expected to start June 3.
