Wilson is an eight-year veteran of the department who has served on the SWAT team for six years. He was the point man for a team of SWAT officers who confronted Davis, after police said Davis brandished a 9mm pistol and refused to drop it.

To balance the needs of the officer with the demands of transparency after a police-involved shooting, the department's policy is to wait three days before releasing the name of an officer involved in a shooting incident.

In addition to receiving numerous traffic safety awards during his career, Wilson was recognized in 2012 with the department's Lifesaving Award for entering the water and rescuing a suicidal citizen, who jumped in the Dan River from Union Street Bridge.

In 2013, he received the Medal of Valor from both the Danville Police Department and the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police for his courageous actions entering a home after hearing a gunshot and leading a family to safety from an intruder, armed with a shotgun, who had broken into their home and was holding them hostage.

WSLS 10 first incorrectly reported in this story that this was a deadly shooting; however, that is not the case.
