Danville Riverwalk Trail flood cleanup could take all summer

Parts of trail expected to reopen Friday

DANVILLE, Va. – The Danville Parks and Recreation Department will likely spend the next several months cleaning up the Riverwalk Trail.

The department closed the trail Tuesday morning, as most of it was underwater.

Most of the trail is expected to be usable by Friday, but getting it completely cleaned up and repaired could take all summer.

Once the water recedes, employees will begin removing debris and making repairs.

"Our plan this time is, rather than try to push it back to the river, we're going to actually haul it out and use it on some of our fields for top dressing because it's got a lot of nutrients in it," said Danville Parks and Recreation maintenance director Randee Brown.

People are also encouraged to be careful at parks over the next few days, as the saturated soil could cause trees to fall.
