Danville veteran receives fully renovated home for Veterans Day

Danville, Va. – Charles Edward Duke Jr. served nearly 10 years in the Marines before suffering a traumatic brain injury.  A fully renovated home that sits in the Schoolfield community now belongs to him thanks to a city program.

The keys and deed were handed over to Afghanistan war veteran during a ceremony held Saturday morning in front of the house at 41 Dallas Ave.

Duke received the home as part of Danville's blight eradication program.

He calls the new home on Dallas Avenue a blessing.

“As a Marine, you are told that you cannot show tears, but I’ve got tears in my eyes now. This is my first house,” said Duke following the ceremony.

Duke says the quiet neighborhood will help him deal with his post-traumatic stress disorder.
