Four-story apartment building evacuated after reports of fire

Smoke caused by malfunctioning elevator motor

DANVILLE, Va. – Fire crews in Danville evacuated a four-story apartment building Saturday morning after receiving reports of a fire.

The Danville Fire Department got the call Saturday about 7:15 a.m. and sent crews to the Heritage Towers Apartments in the 200 block of South Ridge Street.

When the crews arrived, they discovered the smoke was coming from an elevator motor on the first floor. Maintenance workers found a fluid leak in the elevator, which shorted out the pump and created the smoke.

Power to the elevators was turned off and people on the second, third and fourth floors were evacuated due to the smoke.

Tenants were relocated to a safe location on the first floor and to buses outside.

Three people were treated by the Danville first responders and later released.

After fire crews cleared the smoke, tenants were able to return to their apartments.
