Funding requested to extend Danville's Riverwalk Trail

City Council is requesting money from VDOT for two extensions

DANVILLE, Va. – A request is being made to get funding to expand the Riverwalk Trail.

Danville City Council is requesting money from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for two expansions.

Combined, the extensions are estimated to cost around $800,000.

One extension would be from the northern end of Robertson Bridge to Riverside Drive.

The second would be from Union Street Bridge to the future Riverfront Park at the corner of Main Street and Memorial Drive.

"Now that we've pretty much finished, or have the funding to finish, the main trunk of the Riverwalk Trail, we're really looking at how do we start making connections?" said Emily Ragsdale, Danville parks and recreation facilities and services planner.

"How do we start connecting neighborhoods to commercial areas and to health care?"

Construction is expected to start in 2021 or 2022.

The city will find out next June if VDOT will award any money and if so how much.
