This is the first new section built since the trail began in 2011.

The new section will be 2.7 miles long and will start on Spruce Street across from St. Joseph's Catholic Church and end at the Smith River Sports Complex.

"We have a lot of events there with people from out of town who have gaps between soccer games or lacrosse games and it's another amenity that they can use to get away from the complex but not really have to leave the complex," said Henry County administrator Tim Hall.

"Get some exercise, see some more of our community, and then be able to go back for the next event."

Construction is expected to start in early 2018.
