MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Many people woke up Saturday morning to snow-covered yards and trees in Martinsville.
Four to five inches of snow fell in most areas when the precipitation stopped Saturday afternoon, after beginning Friday afternoon, but the roads stayed fairly clear. Martinsville Public Works crews were out clearing roads overnight and police say the main streets stayed problem-free, and there were no downed trees creating issues.
"The snow was just like a wet rain. So it's good," said Kenneth Breedlove, as he used a leaf blower to clear snow off the top of his sedan, parked in his driveway.
Snow did stick in grass and elevated areas like trees and power lines, leaving a white coating on businesses and in residential areas.
"I didn't have a bit of trouble. I did pick streets that didn't have any hills to get back over here," said Jean Royall, who had been out driving Friday.
The weather did disrupt the weekend for some. Around 1,700 people lost power in Henry County, and Patrick Henry Community College closed early Friday and canceled classes Saturday.
