Public meeting being held to discuss future Danville airport operator

Averett University recommended to take over

DANVILLE, Va. – A meeting is taking place in Danville to help determine who will be the operator at the city's airport.

The contract for the current fixed-base operator (FBO), General Aviation, is about to expire.

The airport commission began asking for proposals from companies at the end of last year after months of failed contract negotiations with General Aviation.

Averett University submitted a proposal and the commission recommended it to city council.

Before making a decision, council members decided to form a special committee with two council members and three members of the general public to interview the airport commissioners and hold a public input session.

"We would like to hear the presentations of the public tonight, or the stakeholders, and if there's time we'd like to make a decision as far as what type of recommendation to take to city council," said councilman Fred Shanks, special committee chairman.

If a recommendation is made, it would then be discussed at a council work session, possibly the work session July 6, before being voted on during a council meeting.
