BUCHANAN, Va. - A local nonprofit is continuing its efforts to rescue horses and veterans.

New Freedom Farm not only saves horses in need and nurses them back to health, but also opens its doors to veterans in need.

The organization prides itself on being a safe place for veterans with PTSD and substance abuse issues.

At its second annual open house Saturday, there was a special patriotic ceremony, animals from Angels of Assisi available for adoption, live music and local vendors.

10 News spoke with veterans who say the work this organization is doing is life-saving.

"For many of them, the war is still going on, conflict's still going on within, so this is one way to use as a tool to help them cope," Army veteran Reinaldo Torres said.

New Freedom Farm has helped many veterans get new jobs and apartments since it started last year.
