A professor at Southern New Hampshire University was fired after she tried to fail a student for insisting Australia is a country.

The student, Ashley Arnold, says the initial assignment was to compare a social norm between the United States and another country, in which she chose Australia. Her professor, who hasn't been identified, handed her assignment back with a failing grade and the comment, "Australia is a continent; not a country."

Arnold says he went back-and-forth with the professor trying to convince her that Australia is both a continent and a country, but the professor continued to deny the fact.

The university released a statement via Twitter after the incident saying they had apologized to Ashley and the educator has been replaced.
