News and events happening today

ROANOKE – Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe will be in Roanoke. This morning she visits Westside Elementary. She requested the visit after Roanoke City Public Schools won the Food for Thought Award. She will meet with cafeteria staff and students. This afternoon she will give remarks at the Virginia Boys & Girls Clubs Statewide Conference that's being held at The Hotel Roanoke.

There's a parent forum tonight helping parents be better informed. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Carilion and Franklin County schools are putting on the event tonight at 7 at the high school. Topics include what your children may be hiding from you on their cellphone, rise of heroin and meth in our community, and the contraband items that could be hidden in plain sight.

God's Provision Food Pantry in Rocky Mount is getting a makeover. Food Lion is remodeling and stocking the shelves at more than 60 local food pantries across ten states. This month is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign focused on mobilizing communities to take action on eliminating hunger.

Some special guests are going to the 21st Century Community Learning Center program at Sandusky Middle School in Lynchburg. Former NFL and Heritage High School player Chris Cook will be there along with the current Heritage High School football team talking with them about the importance of staying in school and being respectful.

If you're ready for Halloween, a new haunted house opens in Salem. Meek's Manor has been a year in the making. A portion of the proceeds will go to Hopetree Family Services. It will be open through the first weekend of November.

More than 100 dads, father figures, and male role models will be joining students for Paul Munro Elementary School's annual Donuts with Dads event. Community members will also be participating in the morning event to promote parent and community involvement in education.
