ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -   If you have ideas for downtown Roanoke there's a meeting tonight at the City Market Building. The City's Department of Planning, Building, and Development is currently in the process of updating the Downtown Plan for the next twenty years. The plan is trying to address the rise of downtown living and the importance of public spaces and amenities. It will also focus on successful small businesses, major employers, and other initiatives that help establish downtown Roanoke as a regional destination. The city hopes to finalize the Downtown Plan by the spring of 2017.

In preparation for the annual Dickens of a Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 2, Roanoke's urban forestry team will relocate the donated 30-foot Norway spruce from the 3300 block of Mud Lick Road SW at 8 a.m. and transported to Wells Fargo Plaza between 10 and 11 a.m.

The Virginia Executive Mansion Christmas Tree will be presented to First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe in Richmond. Virginia Christmas tree growers will present trees, wreaths and greenery to use in decorating the Executive Mansion this holiday season. Francisco Farms from Staunton will present a 12 foot tree for the first floor of the Mansion. He won the right to donate the tree at this year's annual meeting of the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association. His tree was selected as Grand Champion, and he will present a similar, fresh tree to the First Lady. Virginia has nearly 600 Christmas tree farms. The Virginia Christmas tree industry ranks #7 in the U.S. by total trees harvested according to 2012 U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics released in May 2014.
