Roanoke airport hangs vintage aircraft in lobby

1937 Waco aircraft now hanging from celing

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport gave us an exclusive look at a rare vintage aircraft that will be on display inside the airport lobby.

A Waco aircraft, built in 1937, is being hung inside the airport Wednesday.

The owner of the aircraft was a set designer for the original Star Trek television series.

Executive Director Tim Bradshaw explained how crew workers are able to hang this unique aircraft in mid-air.

“We think of airplanes as being made out of metal, but back then, they really were really light airplanes. That's why we are able to hang it from the ceiling. I think it's a really unique piece that will kind of add to the terminal here that a lot of people will enjoy,” Bradshaw said.

The aircraft was given to the airport by the Virginia Aviation Historical Society.
