The State Open of Virginia starts Thursday at Ballyhack Golf Club and Wednesday the golf professionals held a junior golf exhibition.
Pro's including last years winner Jay Woodson as well as regional favorite Fielding Brewbaker led the camp. The junior golfers enjoyed watching them and getting advice. The golfers followed the clinic with practice rounds. Salem's Brewbaker talked about being able to play in front of a home crowd.
"As far as feeling pressure from the hometown crowd, no. I feel a lot of support and a lot of people patted me on the back saying 'hey we wish you well, good luck,' and that's a big help. People will tell you that they're pulling for you and that only helps me. I don't think of it is like, 'oh they're counting on me,' I just enjoy the support and really appreciate it," said Brewbaker.
The first tee of the Roanoke Valley was also at the golf club. Vince Wheeler from Roanoke hit the links for practice before he plays in the tournament. He was excited to be able to benefit from the First Tee Program.
"They just provide so many great opportunities, unique things that most kids don't have the opportunity to do. They teach all these great life skills and values that a lot of kids don't learn and it's really, really great program," said Wheeler.
First Tee is also sending Wheeler to Pebble Beach to play golf in the fall.
