ROANOKE (WSLS 10 SPORTS) - Thursday was the opening round of the State Open of Virginia at Ballyhack Golf Club.
Lanto Griffin from Blacksburg finished with the best round of the day. With six birdies and an eagle, he was at the top of the leaderboard with -6.

Three-time defending champion Jay Woodson was tied for eighth after the first round with -2.
Some local golfers faired pretty well in their outings. Keith Decker from Martinsville finished his round with a birdie on hole 9, ending the day +1. After a triple-bogey on 13, Tunstall High School rising senior Chandler Wilkins gained back some ground with a birdie on his final hole to finish +2.
The second round of the tournament is Friday.
