WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WSLS 10 SPORTS) - Since the Greenbrier Classic was cancelled, the golf community including Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Stuart Appleby have reached out to the resort to offer help for the extreme flood damage the town has experienced.
WSLS 10 had a first look at the Old White TPC course, The Greenbrier is taking in those who have lost their homes. Before the start to revive the golf course, they're making it very clear, the well being of the town and the state comes first.
"It would take the focus off what really matters right now which is the community. Just miles from where we stand right now there's complete devastation and there are people without homes and holding a PGA tour tournament is probably just not the right thing to do under those circumstances so we made the decision, the only decision, that there really was to make to cancel it this year and look forward to next year," said Greenbrier Director of Sports Public Relations Cam Huffman.
"Jim's very proud of this community, it's a place where he lives, a place where he calls home and he's been devastated as all of us have been to drive through the community and see the destruction in the disaster and to hear the stories of loss of life and loss of homes and property. There's no question that's where the focus has to be first and that's exactly what he's doing. We're making every effort from the Greenbrier's perspective to help out when we can," he added.
Due to the tight scheduling of PGA tour events, the Classic will not be rescheduled this year but will resume in 2017.
