BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Virginia Tech's head men's basketball coach Buzz Williams agreed to a contract extension that will secure his position in Blacksburg through the 2022-23 season.

Last season, he led the Hokies to 20 victories and an NIT bid. The Hokies finished the season with a 20-15 overall record and a 10-8 ACC mark. In his third season as head coach, Virginia Tech enters the 2016-17 campaign as a preseason Top-25 team. The ranking marks the first time the Hokies will begin a season ranked since the 2010-11 season.

Before Williams' arrival in 2013-14, the program went 9-22 overall and 2-16 in ACC play. In just two years, the coach was able to guide Virginia Tech to a six-game ACC winning streak, their longest since winning eight-consecutive Southern Conference games in 1964-65.

"Our family is incredibly appreciative of the faith that Whit, Dr. Sands and everyone have placed in me and our talented staff," Williams said. "I keep telling everyone across the country that there's something special about Virginia Tech. We have great momentum as a university and athletic department. The people make it special."

Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock noted that Williams adds more than just an improved basketball program to Virginia Tech.

"Coach Williams has made a positive impact on the culture of our basketball program at Virginia Tech in a very short time," Babcock said. "Just as importantly, he's a teacher, an educator, and he's served as an ambassador for Virginia Tech, not only on our campus and in Virginia, but also all across the country. We appreciate all that Coach Williams and his staff have already done for our students and our program. We appreciate their commitment to continuing the work they have so successfully begun at Virginia Tech. Our future is bright."

Along with Wednesday's announcement of the head coach's contract extension, Buzz and Corey Williams announced they would fund two endowed scholarships for Virginia Tech students.

The Buzz's Bunch Scholarship Endowment stems from Buzz's Bunch, a non-profit organization that the Williams family created eight years ago at Marquette University. The scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate student who is registered with Services for Students with Disabilities.

The Buzz and Corey Williams Family Student-Athlete Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of T. Marshall Hahn. The award will be given annually to an undergraduate student-athlete on any women's intercollegiate team at Virginia Tech. Preference will be given to students who are first generation college students, and also students who are members of an underrepresented population at Virginia Tech.
