Chavis headlines Carolina League All-Star roster

Red Sox's third baseman Michael Chavis among Salem players on all-star roster

SALEM, Va. – Next week the all-stars are heading to the Star City.

For the first time since 2006, the Carolina League All-Star Classic will be hosted by the Salem Red Sox.

"I think it's going to be a good atmosphere. You know, we've been getting great crowds Friday, Saturday, Sunday. If it's anything like that, it's going to be a great time and a great atmosphere. Just to bring all the best guys in the league here is going to be a good time," all-star relief pitcher Trevor Kelley said.

Salem, that has five all-stars on this year's roster, currently sits at the top of the Carolina League standings.

"It's not just the all-stars, they're key guys but to be a first place team everyone's got to be clicking on all cylinders and that's what we've been doing. We've been playing nine innings of baseball every game and not giving in, not letting out so it's kind of our motto."

One of the Red Sox All-Stars is dominating the league stats. As we approach the end of the first half of the season, third-baseman Michael Chavis leads the Carolina League in batting average, slugging percentage, RBI's, runs and homers.

"I was pretty excited this year. It's actually my first time I've made an all-star team and the way this year has been going I was pretty excited to find out about the results so I'm pretty proud of myself. I set a goal at the beginning of the season to make the all-star team up here in the Carolina League so having that pay off half way through the season is a big deal for me so I'm pretty excited for it," Chavis said.

The action starts Monday with a hitting challenge at Kiwanis field. The All-Star game will be Tuesday at Lewis Gale field.
