Staunton River linebacker carries on football tradition, literally

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – A Staunton River High School tradition was born out of the belief that a hardcore attitude deserves a hardcore symbol.

One chosen football player leads the team onto the field every Friday night, carrying a sledgehammer, an award for outstanding performance.

Chuck Poston brought the tradition with him when he started coaching the team nearly a decade ago. Poston attributes the tradition to the team's good state of mind and overall success.

"Our kids buy into that," Poston said. "They buy into that sledgehammer, hard hat, lunch pail mentality; that is what we want to do. We want to come to work every day, we want to give an honest day's work while we are here."

For last Friday night's game, blocking back and inside linebacker Brock Porter carried the sledgehammer. Porter led the team onto the field to take on Liberty, which he actually quarterbacked last season.
