Early signing period not a distraction for Hokies' bowl preps

Virginia Tech adds 24 during early signing period

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech is eight days away from their showdown with one of the most dynamic offenses in Oklahoma State. As if that's not enough to prepare for, the coaching staff had a huge day with the early signing period.

The Hokies had 24 players sign early; six are Virginia natives, including Cole Beck from Blacksburg. Ten of the student-athletes will be early enrollees. While there are mixed emotions around college football regarding the early signing period, coach Justin Fuente says it hasn't been a distraction from the Hokies bowl game preps.

"You know, we always have recruiting going on during bowl prep and I think the date of our bowl game certainly aids us," said Fuente.

"I think the people that had to play on Dec.16th and those sorts of dates, I would be interested to hear how they handled all that stuff. So I don't know that the early signing date has been a huge distraction for us in terms of trying to prepare."

Speaking of the Camping World Bowl, the players on the defensive side say they're ready for the challenge the Cowboys will bring.

"The whole defense takes it as a challenge. I mean, their whole offense is definitely explosive, they definitely can stretch the field, and we know that," said cornerback Greg Stroman.

"We're just going to play ball and that's just what we're going to do,...,just another game really, just the last one."

The Hokies will leave for Orlando this weekend, where they will begin practicing Sunday.
