JF, Salem girls soccer teams to collide for state title

Salem rolled while JF escaped with a semifinal win Friday

Salem, Va. – SW Virginia girls soccer will take center stage Saturday in Salem. The Salem girls will battle area rival Jefferson Forest for the 4A girls soccer title after both teams advanced in semifinal action. Salem blasted Jamestown 6-1 while JF survived a 1-1 match through overtime with King's Fork that was decided on penalty kicks 4 to 3. Meanwhile in 3A girls soccer action, three-time defending champion Blacksburg was ousted in the semifinals by Brentsville, 1-0.

In boys soccer action, perennial power Blacksburg handled Tabb 2-0 to reach the state finals. The program has 12 state titles in its illustrious history.  In the 2A ranks, Giles stays undefeated and reaches the state finals with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Stuarts Draft. Appomattox was defeated by Maggie Walker 5-0. In 1A action Galax is back in the state finals with a 4-1 win over Northhampton. Radford will join them in an all-area matchup after the Bobcats bounced Rappahannock 2-0.

On the baseball diamonds, Liberty Christian Academy advances to the 4A finals with a 7-4 win over Great Bridge. Brookville bows out of the 3A tournament with an 18-6 loss to Riverside. Dan River advances to the title game in 2A, where they will get a rematch with region rival John Battle. The Wildcats edged Madison County with a 3-1 win. In 1A the Auburn Eagles move into a title tilt with a 5-1 win oveR Windsor.

In state softball, Brookville advances to the state finals for the fourth year in a row. They are seeking their third title in those four years after a 5-0 blanking of York in the semifinals. They will face defending state champion Warhill in the final from the Moyer complex in Salem on Saturday.
