Salem boys, girls lacrosse win conference titles

ROANOKE, Va. – It was a great night to be a Salem Spartan.

The school had multiple sports teams competing in conference play, including the boys and girls lacrosse teams, who were looking to come away as the American Conference champions.

The girls hit the road to face Hidden Valley. It was tied at 5 at halftime and both teams continued to battle in the second half. Lilly Blair passed it to Libby Bowman and she bounced it in for the score. At the other end, Meg Coolbaugh fed it to Millie Kidd, in stride and she finished strong. The Titans trailed by 2. A little later Kellie Hanson avoided the trap and scored as she fell down. But Salem responded with a nice play, showing that teamwork makes the dream work. It took just two passes off the draw and Madi Caldwell finds the net. Salem goes on to win 14-8, claiming the American Conference championship.

On the boys side of the conference the Spartan boys sealed the deal at home, against Cave Spring. Tony Migliarese fought through traffic late in the third quarter, to score the ball. Later in the fourth, Evan McMillan scooped up a loose ball in the Knights territory and scored. Cave Spring scored one goal but that was it. Salem won 18-1 and was crowned conference champions.

Both teams will be back in action on Thursday in the first round of South Zone play. The girls will host E.C. Glass at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. as they play Jefferson Forest.
