Hokies coaches look forward to opener

Virginia Tech preps to renew West Virginia rivalry

Marcus Vick led the Hokies to the last win over West Virginia in the series, a 34-17 victory in Morgantown.

Virginia Tech's opener against the Mountaineers is the two school's first meeting since 2005. Despite the long layoff, there are plenty of folks that are excited to see these two teams go head-to-head again.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to play West Virginia -- it's been awhile," longtime defensive coordinator Bud Foster said.  "This will be my 20th time being involved in this game, a lot of great memories and some big football games, some important football games. These programs parallel each other in a lot of ways as far as the blue-collar mentality, the toughness of the kids," Foster said.

"They're going to be excited," head coach Justin Fuente said. "This is not a game where we've got to figure out a way to get them fired up to play. That's going to happen no matter what." Fuente said.

The Hokies held the black diamond trophy six of the nine years it was contested, but West Virginia leads the overall series 28-22 with one tie.
