VT preps for non-conference season finale

Hokies and Monarchs to play for the first time

BLACKSBURG, Va. – After an impressive 47-point victory over the weekend, Virginia Tech is now moving to the next chapter of the 2017 season, as they welcome in ODU Saturday to close out the non-conference schedule.

The Hokies hope to win the battle up front on the offensive line. It's a spot where they kept the Pirates on their heels and opened up the rushing attack. Tech had 10 different players carrying the rock totaling 287 yards and three touchdowns.

"We kind of got our feet underneath us and really had a good handle on what we were getting on both sides of the ball. The kids handled the adjustments," head coach Justin Fuente said.

The O-line will need to be just as impressive on Saturday. They face a Monarchs team  that currently leads the nation with 16 sacks through three games.

"I haven't been sacked very often, I can say that. I think maybe once last game I was sacked, I mean, they do a great job in my opinion all around," said quarterback Josh Jackson.

"Chung and Pfaff are kind of the new guys and they've been doing a great job."

The defense will face a dynamic true freshman quarterback in Steven Williams, who threw two touchdowns and will make his first career start this weekend.

"Reminds me of AJ Bush in a lot of ways as far as his height and explosiveness with the ball in his hand. He's got a live arm, just not a lot of experience," said defensive coordinator Bud Foster.

"But I do see a tremendous athlete and he has a supporting cast."

Saturday will be the first meeting between ODU and Virginia Tech. The Monarchs come in as winners in their last four of five games on the road.
