Radford honors former coach

Davis honored for monumental contributions

RADFORD, Va.   Radford honored perhaps the most important coach in its basketball program's history on Thursday. The Highlanders basketball office suite has been named in honor of former coach Joe Davis and his wife Anne.   Davis successfully orchestrated the program's climb from an unaffiliated small college team all the way up to an NCAA Division I program. Davis posted nine winning seasons in 10 years from 1978-88.  He led the Highlanders to a  23-4 record in 1978-79 and a 16-12 mark in 1984-85, Radford's first Division I season.

"It was a family atmosphere. We just didn't recruit players we recruited people. Good people. And the coaches the same way and I think if you check the record you'll see that's true," says Davis.

"A great experience playing for him. It's something that I really appreciated and gain so much knowledge from not only playing for him but coming back and coaching for him as well,"  says current North Carolina assistant coach Steve Robinson.

Robinson played for Davis during his time at Radford.  Davis left Radford in 1988 as the all-time winningest coach, posting 165 victories and a .589 winning percentage.
