RICHMOND, Va. - The commonwealth has officially inaugurated Democrat Ralph Northam as the 73rd Governor of Virginia.
The 58-year-old physician and statesman took the oath of office before thousands on a cold day at the state capitol.
The windy weather didn't keep thousands of supporters, or nine previous governors from attending the Inauguration.
The ceremony began with Northam sworn in by Attorney General Mark Herring and Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax.
The theme of his address was "the way ahead" from Virginia's history in the American Revolution to the slave trade, to finding Virginia's way ahead today.
He called on both parties to find the way ahead by working together, and not let "nasty, shallow tweets replace honest debate."
He received a standing ovation when he called for expanding Medicaid.
Northam made promises to be honest, put Virginia first and keep his door open.
